Fees for therapy
Fees charged our practitioners vary according to the type of practitioner and the type of service.
Psychologists based their fees on the APS (Australian Psychology Society) recommended fees which currently recommends a fee of $311 for a 46 to 60-minute appointment. At Lantern Psychology, psychologists' rates currently range from between $225 – $311 a session and the 2025 Medicare rebates for a 50 min session are $97 for a registered psychologist and $141.85 for a clinical psychologist.
Counsellors and psychotherapists fees start at $140 per hour.

Medicare rebates
With a referral under a Mental Health Care Treatment Plan from a GP, psychology sessions attract a rebate of $141.85 per session for sessions with a clinical psychologist or $96.65 with a registered psychologist, with out-of-pocket costs typically between $110–$150.
Longer sessions may cost more, though the rebate remains the same.
Note: Relationship counselling is not eligible for Medicare rebates.

Payments & cancellation policy
EFTPOS and credit card facilities are available at the Lantern Psychology rooms and Medicare rebates can be processed at the time of payment or you can provide your credit card details for automatic payment after a session. Rebates are usually received by clients on the following business day, provided their bank accounts are listed with Medicare.
48 hours notice is generally required to cancel or change your appointment, or the full cost of the session may be charged.

Discounted rates
Although we do not provide a bulk-billing service, many of our therapists reserve discount places for those on low incomes.
Please contact individual psychologists for information about the availability of discounted places.
Please note that discounts do not apply to initial sessions unless previously arranged.
From time to time, Lantern Psychology hosts student counsellors or psychologists who provide psychological services at low fees.

At Lantern Psychology, our goals is to ensure rebates are as stress-free as possible.

Medicare Rebates
Under the Better Access to mental health scheme, clients who have a Mental Health Care Treatment Plan (MHCTP) and a referral to a psychologist from their GP, are eligible for rebates for up to 10 psychology sessions a calendar year through Medicare.
We take your Medicare card details in the online registration process before the first session and process the rebates for you as soon as you have paid for each session. Rebates can usually be found in your bank account the next day.
Further information about how to get a MHCTP can be found here.
